From the history of the von Stackelberg’s in Estonia

The Stackelbergs were mentioned for the first time in historical documents as a vassal family in Dorpat (Tartu). The name of Henricus de Stakilberg, together with that of a Dorpat citizen Johannes Dives, is mentioned in a bond issue in a register of debts of Riga dated the 15th of February, 1306. In one Reval document dating back to 1341 we will find the seal of Knappen Arnoldus Stackelberg as a co-representative of the City of Dorpat. In 1389, Bishop Dietrich lent to Johann Stackelberg, the son of Arnolds Jr., the house Belgel and its bordering lands.

The documented family line begins with Arent Stackelberg, whose son, the latter apprentice reeve Peter Stackelberg (died in 1545), acquired in 1504 the manors of Lynepith in the parish of Camby (Kambja), Camby itself and other properties.

The descendants of his four sons spread throughout Livland, Estonia and Ösel, and were entered in the knights’ matriculation register of the region already before the Brotherhoods of Knights were founded. Branches of the family are spread to Finland, Sweden and Russia.
